Biodegradable and Non Biodegradable Substances

Our Environment is made of living and nonliving things. These things always interact with each other making some impact on environment. Depending on the ability to get decomposed, these substances are classified as Biodegradable and Non biodegradable substances.

Biodegradable Substances

The substances which can be decomposed by microorganisms into their simplest form are called biodegradable substances. E.g. waste food, vegetable peels, used tea leaves, waste paper. All these products if buried in soil then the microorganisms decompose these into simple substances such as nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, water. Biodegradable substances get recycled in nature. But if these wastes are in huge quantity then it creates harmful effects in nature such as hazards, spoiling of food chain.

Non-Biodegradable substances

The substances that cannot be decomposed by microorganisms are called non- biodegradable substances. E.g. Plastic, rubber, electronic waste. These substances can’t be recycled in nature. Waste produced from these substances get accumulated in nature and causes severe problems. Human being has to use suitable waste disposal method so as to properly dispose the waste produced by non- biodegradable substances.
