In this article we will discuss in brief about global warming and greenhouse effect.

Global Warming

Greenhouse Effect

About 75% of solar energy reaching the earth is absorbed by the earth’s surface. Remaining energy is reflected back in the atmosphere. The reflected energy is absorbed by some gases called as greenhouse gases. Some of the greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, chlorofluorocarbon or CFC and nitrous oxide. The energy absorbed by the gases causes heating of atmosphere near the earth’s surface. Thus, this process helps to maintain the temperature of earth about 33°C. However, this allows the survival of life.

The trapping of solar heat in the atmosphere near the earth’s surface, thereby keeping earth warm. Such an effect is called greenhouse effect. What will happen if greenhouse gases increase in the atmosphere? If the greenhouse gases increase in the atmosphere, absorption of solar energy will also increase. As a result earth’s temperature will increase, which will in turn cause disturbance in global climate. This unwanted effect is termed as Global Warming.

Effects of Global Warming

Global warming increases the temperature of earth’s surface as well as disturbs ecological balance. If there is continuous increase in temperature may lead to melting of polar ice caps. This can cause flooding of low lying areas all over the earth. Also increase in temperature can result in spread of disease like dengue, yellow fever, malaria, sleeping sickness, etc.

Major Contributors to Global Warming

  • Carbon dioxide is present in 0.03% in the atmosphere. However, it has an ability to trap heat energy coming from earth surface. Increase in level of carbon dioxide is the major contributor to global warming.
  • Methane is produced when vegetation is burnt, digested or rotted in absence of oxygen. Paddy fields, coal mines, rotting garbage bumps and fossil fuels are sources from where methane is released in atmosphere.
  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are man made industrial chemical that is used in air conditioning and refrigeration applications. CFCs also cause harm to our protective ozone layer.
Nitrous Oxide occurs naturally in environment.
  • The average level of these gases is increasing due to use of chemical fertilizers and burning of fossil fuels.

Prevention from global warming

  • By Reducing the use of fossil fuel, which can be done majorly by lowering use of automobiles. Instead of private vehicle we can use public transport system, even use of bicycles is fashion now a days.
  • Discourage cutting of trees and deforestation and encourage tree plantation.
  • Follow rules such as no smoking at public places.
  • Spread awareness regarding global warming to other people.
