1. What is the composition of air ?
Answer: Air is composed of different gases, water vapours and dust particles. Main constituents of air are nitrogen(79%), oxygen(20%), carbon dioxide(1%) and few other gases in small amount.
2. Which gas in the atmosphere is essential for respiration?
Answer: Oxygen is essential for respiration.
3. How will you prove that air supports burning?
Answer: Air supports burning can be proved by performing a simple experiment. Take lighted candle and cover it with transparent glass such that air cannot pass through it. After few minutes, it can be observed that candle is extinguished. Candle keep burning till there is availability of oxygen in air inside the glass. Once oxygen inside the glass is used up, candle extinguishes. This shows that air supports burning.
4. How will you show that air is dissolved in water?
Answer: Take water in container and heat it slowly. Observe water in the container carefully. It can be noticed that, before reaching the boiling point of water, there is formation of bubble at the inner surface of the container. These, bubbles are formed due to dissolved air in water.
5. Why does a lump of cotton wool shrink in water?
Answer: Lump of cotton wool shrinks in water because, lump of cotton wool has air gaps, when it is placed in water air from cotton escapes and water is placed in those gaps.
6. The layer of air around the earth is known as ___________.
Answer: Atmosphere
7. The component of air used by green plants to make their food, is ___________.
Answer: Carbon dioxide.
8. List five activities that are possible due to the presence of air.
Answer: Following activities are possible due to the presence of air.
- Burning something
- Flying kite
- Winnowing
- Generate electricity through windmills
- Respiration
9. How do plants and animals help each other in the exchange of gases in the atmosphere ?
Answer: Humans and other animals need oxygen to breath and they release carbon dioxide instead. Carbon dioxide is utilized by the plants in the process of photosynthesis and releases oxygen. With these processes plant and animals supports in exchange of gases in the atmosphere.
