NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Science Chapter 14 Water

1. Fill up the blanks in the following:

(a) The process of changing of water into its vapour is called _________________.

Answer: evaporation

(b) The process of changing water vapour into water is called _________________.

Answer: condensation

(c) No rainfall for a year or more may lead to _________________ in that region.

Answer: drought

(d) Excessive rains may cause _________________.

Answer: floods

2. State for each of the following whether it is due to evaporation or condensation:

(a) Water drops appear on the outer surface of a glass containing cold water.

Answer: Condensation

(b) Steam rising from wet clothes while they are ironed.

Answer: Evaporation

(c) Fog appearing on a cold winter morning.

Answer: Condensation

(d) Blackboard dries up after wiping it.

Answer: Evaporation

(e) Steam rising from a hot girdle when water is sprinkled on it.

Answer: Evaporation

3. Which of the following statements are “true” ?

(a) Water vapour is present in air only during the monsoon.

Answer: False. [ Water vapour is present in air in all season. ]

(b) Water evaporates into air from oceans, rivers and lakes but not from the soil.

Answer: False. [ Water evaporates into air from oceans, rivers, lakes as well as soil. ]

(c) The process of water changing into its vapour, is called evaporation.

Answer: True.

(d) The evaporation of water takes place only in sunlight.

Answer: False. [ Evaporation of water takes place in sunlight as well as shade. ]

(e) Water vapour condenses to form tiny droplets of water in the upper layers of air where it is cooler.

Answer: True.

4. Suppose you want to dry your school uniform quickly. Would spreading it near an anghiti or heater help? If yes, how?

Answer: Yes. Water evaporates faster in heat, thus, heat provided by anghiti or heater will causes water to evaporate at faster rate, and so clothes will dry quickly.

5. Take out a cooled bottle of water from refrigerator and keep it on a table. After some time you notice a droplets of water around it. Why?

Answer: After keeping the cool bottle on the table, vapours in the surrounding starts to convert in water droplet, by the process of condensation. Due to which, droplets of water are noticed around the bottle.

6. To clean their spectacles, people often breathe out on glasses to make them wet. Explain why the glasses become wet.

Answer: When people breath out on glass the vapour came out and collide on the glass. When vapour collide it condenses on the glass and glass become wet.

7. How are clouds formed?

Answer: The water evaporates from rivers, oceans, seas, soil, etc. Water vapour goes up in the air up to the certain height. After reaching the sky air gets cooler and condenses water vapour thereby, converting those vapours into tiny droplets. Those droplets flow in the sky and appears to be a cloud.

8. When does a drought occur?

Answer: Water evaporate continuously from soil and plants by evaporation and transpiration respectively. If there is no rain for a longer time the level of water from ponds and rivers goes down. Some of them may dry. This may lead to drought.
