Development means

  • Getting essential things such as income, health, education.
  • Better life by fulfilling aspirations and desires
  • Social equality so that peoples of different groups of societies will have same affection with each other.
  • Achieving these is a complex task

Development can be viewed in two aspects those are

  • Development of an Individual
  • Development of Nation

Public Facilities

  • Money is not the only thing that is needed to live.
  • We need other things too such as pollution free environment, unadulterated medicines, proper health care, quality food.
  • These things can not be obtained by efforts and investment of any single individual, it needs collective support.
  • Public facilities are mainly provided by government to fulfill the needs of at least a group or community.
  • e.g. Basic health and education facilities, Ration shops are some of the examples of public facilities.
  • But many times common peoples don’t get such facilities resulting into various problems. such as if ration shops did not function properly then health and nutritional status in that area will adversely affected.

BMI –  Body Mass Index

  • Lack of quality food can lead to undernourished adults.
  • one way to find this is to measure BMI i.e. body mass index.
  • we can calculate body mass index (BMI) by dividing weight in kg to square of height in meter.
  • If the BMI is less than 18.5 then it signifies undernourished condition
  • If BMI is more than 25 then it signifies overweight.
  • so a healthy person is identified by BMI between 18.5 to 25.
  • This criteria is not applicable to growing children.

Human development Index

  • Human development report is published by UNDP.
  • This report compare countries based on educational level of peoples, their health status and per capita income.
  • UNDP assign ranks to different countries based on the comparison.
  • This rank is called Human Development Index.
  • HDI index of India is 136 out of 177 total countries in 2013.

Sustainable Development

  • Now we know what development is? It is all round development of a nation. But does this development promise to be maintained in future?
  • No, In a way to get developed the non-renewable resources such as groundwater, crude oil, coal are overused. Being non-renewable resources, these will run out one day.
  • Also overuse of these will create adverse effect on environment too. So degradation of environment is one of the factor that need to be considered while developing.
  • We should get developed but with promise to maintain the development for the future generations, this is called sustainable development.
  • We can achieve sustainable development by lowering the use of non-renewable resources such as groundwater, crude oil and encouraging renewable sources such as sun, wind.
