Chapter 12 Electricity and Circuits Notes

  • Two pencil like objects in a torch is called an electric cell
  • Electric cells are used in wrist watches, calculators, transistor radios, in cameras, etc
  • The positive and negative signs on an electric cell is positive and negative electric terminal respectively.
  • Electric cell produces energy with the help of chemical stored in it. Chemical energy is converted into electric energy
  • Simple electric circuit with bulb
    • Get a bulb, few wires, and an electric cell
    • Take two wires and fix them on bulb
    • Fix two wires on electric cell
    • Connect each wire of bulb to different terminals of cell
    • Bulb lights up, simple electric cell is ready
  • Electric switch – Device needed to start and stop the flow of current in an electric circuit is called as electric switch. If the bulb doesn’t glows, then switch is OFF / OPEN. If the bulb glows, then switch is ON/ CLOSED . When switch is in OFF or OPEN condition it is said to be open circuit. If the switch is in ON / CLOSED condition then it is said to be in closed circuit.

  • Conductors and insulators –
    Conductors Insulator
Allows the current to pass through it Donot allow the current to pass through it
Electric bulb in a circuit glows Electric bulb in a circuit doesnt grows
Metals are conductors Non metals are insulators
E.g copper, aluminum, gold, and silver E.g. wood, plastic, rubber, etc
