1.(a) Which kind of garbage is not converted into compost by the redworms?

Answer: Plastic bags, aluminium cans, aluminium papers, bottles, glass, thermocol products and more are not converted into compost by the redworms.

(b) Have you seen any other organism besides redworms, in your pit? If yes, try to find out their names. Draw pictures of these.

Answer: Yes. That can be other microorganisms, species of worms i.e. earthworms, mealworms,etc. And other bacteria which helps in decomposing biodegradable garbage.

2. Discuss :

(a) Is garbage disposal the responsibility only of the government?

Answer: No. Every citizen must take the responsibility to decompose the garbage or and waste material properly. Also, try to minimise the activities that pollute our surrounding and our environment.

(b) Is it possible to reduce the problems relating to disposal of garbage?

Answer: Yes, it is possible to reduce the problems relating to disposal of garbage if following things are used by every individual –

  1. Do not use plastic bags. Instead use paper bags, cloth or jute bags.
  2. Distribute the garbage on basis of dry garbage, wet garbage.(Degradable or biodegradable).
  3. Follow the proper methods of disposal.
  4. Follow three R’s – Reduce, Recycle and Reuse

3. (a) What do you do with the left over food at home?

Answer: Leftover food at home can be used to feed animals roaming on streets. Also, it can be used to create manure, which is essential for the growth of plants.

(b) If you and your friends are given the choice of eating in a plastic plate or a banana leaf platter at a party, which one would you prefer and why?

Answer: Plastic is non-biodegradable material which can cause pollution if not disposed properly, whereas, banana leaf is biodegradable and can be easily disposed by making compost. Hence, we must use banana leaf platter.

4. (a) Collect pieces of different kinds of paper. Find out which of these can be recycled.

Answer: All papers like newspaper, magazines, notebooks, etc are recyclable.

(b) With the help of a lens look at the pieces of paper you collected for the above question. Do you see any difference in the material of recycled paper and a new sheet of paper ?

Answer: The new sheet of paper has better quality than the recycled paper. Also, the new sheet of paper is softer than the recycled paper sheet.

5. (a)Collect different kinds of packaging material. What was the purpose for which each one was used? Discuss in groups.

Answer:

  1. Cloth bags, jute bags are used to carry food material.
  2. Plastic bags are by shopkeepers for packaging.

(b) Give an example in which packaging could have been reduced?

Answer: Use of plastic bags can be reduced, as it is non biodegradable material and causes pollution. If burnt plastic releases, harmful gases in atmosphere which can causes various diseases.

(c) Write a story on how packaging increases the amount of garbage.

6. Do you think it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilisers? Why?

Answer:

  1. Compost is made of degradable waste elements which are easily available and are harmless for soil. Compost maintain the fertility of soil. Whereas, chemical fertilisers damage the soil by reducing it’s fertility level.
  2. Compost can be made available by decomposing the waste material. Hence, it is cheap. Chemical fertilisers are expensive and harmful.
