1. Classify the following fibres as natural or synthetic: nylon, wool, cotton, silk, polyester, jute.
Answer: Fibres obtained from plants or animals are natural fibres, whereas, fibre obtained artificially by chemical methods are synthetic fibres. Given fibres can be classified into natural and synthetic fibres as follows
- Natural fibres – wool, cotton, silk, jute.
- Synthetic fibres – nylon and polyester.
2. State whether the following statements are true or false:
a) Yarn is made from fibres.
Answer: True.
b) Spinning is a process of making fibres.

4. From which parts of the plant cotton and jute are obtained ?
Answer: Cotton is obtained from the fruits of cotton plant. Jute is obtained from the stem of the jute plant.
5. Name two items that are made from coconut fibre.
Answer: Mats (Floor mats and doormats) and ropes.
6. Explain the process of making yarn from fibre.
Answer: The process of making yarn from fibre is called spinning. In this process, fibres from a mass of cotton wool are drawn out and twisted. This brings the fibre together to form a yarn.
